Grease builds up quietly inside canopies, ducts and fans. These seven signs suggest it is time to book an inspection and clean, plus what not to do while you wait.

Most grease in a kitchen exhaust system is out of sight. By the time it is obvious on the canopy, more may have built up in the ducts and fan. Watch for these seven signs, and book an assessment if you notice them.
01
A sticky film or thick deposits on the canopy interior, gutters or extraction openings.
02
Dripping can point to excessive build-up, blocked gutters or soiled filters.
03
Filters that look clogged soon after cleaning, or never seem to come clean.
04
Poor extraction can have several causes, including contaminated filters or ducts.
05
Grease around the fan housing or discharge area suggests build-up inside the fan.
06
Grease can contribute, but noise also needs a proper mechanical check.
07
If you cannot find the last clean date or report, the system is probably due.
Book an assessment so the canopy, plenum, ducts, exhaust fan and filters can be looked at together. Within the agreed scope, Apex cleans all accessible and reachable areas of your kitchen exhaust system and can provide before-and-after photos.
Stay safe: never enter ducts, climb onto roofs or dismantle operating equipment to investigate. Work at height carries specific duties in Victoria under the OHS Regulations 2017. If you have an immediate safety concern, address it before continuing to cook.
Removing grease can support airflow, but a particular improvement cannot be assumed from cleaning alone. Smoke problems can also come from fan faults, airflow imbalance or ventilation design. Noise and vibration can come from wear, loose components or bearing problems. These issues may need a qualified technician to diagnose and correct.
Apex can note visible equipment concerns during cleaning and recommend further specialist servicing where needed.
Dripping may indicate excessive build-up, contaminated filters, blocked grease collection areas or other maintenance issues. Arrange a professional assessment.
Possible causes include blocked filters, contaminated ductwork, fan faults, airflow imbalance or design issues. A qualified technician may be needed to find the cause.
Removing accumulated grease reduces a potential fuel source within extraction equipment. Cleaning supports fire risk management but does not remove every possible hazard.
